Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Posted on January 28, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a detailed, step-by-step guide for making Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy—classic, hearty, and comforting:

Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Salisbury Steaks

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (preferably 80% lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Onion Gravy

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Prepare the Salisbury Steaks

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently until just combined.
  3. Form into 4 oval patties, about 1 inch thick.

2. Cook the Patties

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little oil.
  2. Brown the patties 3–4 minutes per side until nicely seared (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
  3. Remove patties and set aside.

3. Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft and golden, about 5–7 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in beef broth, ensuring no lumps.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  5. Bring to a simmer until gravy thickens.

4. Finish Cooking the Steaks

  1. Return the patties to the skillet with the gravy.
  2. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until patties are fully cooked (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).
  3. Spoon gravy over the patties while cooking.

5. Serve

  • Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
  • Spoon extra onion gravy over the top.

💡 Tips for the Best Salisbury Steak

  • Don’t overmix the beef; overworking can make patties tough.
  • Let patties rest a few minutes after cooking to retain juices.
  • Add a splash of red wine to the gravy for extra depth of flavor.
