Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

Posted on October 31, 2025 by Admin
Yes! 🥓🥬 Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic is Southern comfort food at its finest — simple, hearty, and packed with smoky-sweet flavor. It makes the perfect side dish or even a full meal with cornbread on the side.

🥬 Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

Ingredients

(Serves 4–6)

  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped

  • 1 medium head of green cabbage (about 6–8 cups), cored and chopped

  • 1 large onion, sliced or chopped

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika (optional but delicious)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar or a splash of hot sauce (optional, for brightness)

🧑‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Cook the bacon:
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp.
Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside. Leave about 2–3 tablespoons of bacon grease in the pan.

  2. Sauté onion and garlic:
Add onions to the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes, until soft and golden.
Stir in garlic and cook another 30 seconds, just until fragrant.

  3. Add the cabbage:
Add chopped cabbage to the skillet. Toss well to coat with the bacon drippings.
Season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika if using.

  4. Cook until tender:
Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes, until cabbage is tender and lightly caramelized.
(You can cook it less for crunchier cabbage, or longer for softer, more savory results.)

  5. Finish and serve:
Stir in cooked bacon and drizzle with apple cider vinegar or a splash of hot sauce for extra flavor.
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

  6. Serve hot:
Great on its own, or as a side with roasted chicken, sausage, or pork chops.

💡 Tips & Variations

  • Add sausage: Slice smoked sausage or kielbasa and cook it with the bacon for a heartier meal.

  • Spicy version: Add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes or a diced jalapeño.

  • Butter boost: Add 1 tbsp butter near the end of cooking for extra richness.

  • Low-carb meal: This is keto-friendly, packed with flavor, and very filling!

Would you like me to give you a Southern-style version with a touch of brown sugar and vinegar (like what’s served with cornbread and beans)?
