Posted on October 13, 2025 by Admin
Here’s a true comfort classic — tender beef in rich, savory gravy spooned generously over creamy mashed potatoes. It’s simple, hearty, and endlessly satisfying.

🥩 Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

Perfect for weeknights or cozy weekends, this dish uses slow-simmered or pan-seared beef in homemade gravy, served over buttery mashed potatoes for a complete, soul-warming meal.

🧾 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

🥩 For the Beef & Gravy:

  • 1½ to 2 lbs beef stew meat, chuck roast, or sirloin tips, cut into chunks

  • Salt & black pepper

  • 2 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2½ cups beef broth (low sodium)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp thyme (dried or fresh)

  • Optional: ½ tsp paprika or a splash of soy sauce for depth

🥔 For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2½ lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • ½ cup milk or cream

  • ¼ cup butter

  • Salt & pepper to taste

🔪 Instructions

1. Brown the Beef

  • Pat beef dry and season with salt and pepper.

  • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high.

  • Sear beef in batches until browned on all sides (don’t overcrowd). Remove and set aside.

2. Make the Gravy Base

  • In the same pan, reduce heat and add onions. Sauté until soft (3–5 minutes).

  • Add garlic; cook 1 minute.

  • Sprinkle in flour and stir well to coat the onions, forming a roux. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.

3. Simmer the Gravy

  • Slowly whisk in beef broth to avoid lumps.

  • Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and paprika or soy sauce if using.

  • Return beef to the pan. Cover and simmer on low for 1 to 1½ hours, or until beef is tender and the gravy is rich.

⏱️ Quick option: Use tender cuts like sirloin and simmer for 30 minutes.

4. Make the Mashed Potatoes

  • Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (15–20 minutes).

  • Drain and mash with butter, warm milk or cream, salt, and pepper.

  • Adjust texture to your liking (add more milk for creaminess).

5. Assemble & Serve

  • Spoon a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto each plate.

  • Top with tender beef and lots of gravy.

  • Garnish with chopped parsley or a crack of black pepper.

✅ Tips:

  • Add a splash of balsamic vinegar or red wine to the gravy for extra richness.

  • For extra creaminess, stir cream cheese or sour cream into the mashed potatoes.

  • Want veggies? Add peas, mushrooms, or carrots to the beef mixture in the last 20 minutes of simmering.

Would you like a slow cooker version, or one made with leftover roast beef or ground beef instead?
