# I soaked my berries in salt water and saw these white wiggling things come out. Should I just throw them away?

Posted on March 30, 2026 by Admin

Yes — you should definitely throw those berries away.

Those “white wiggling things” are almost certainly insects or larvae (worms) that were living in the berries. Even if you soak or rinse them, some bacteria or parasites could remain, making the berries unsafe to eat.

🛑 Why You Should Discard Them

  • Health risk: Larvae can carry bacteria or parasites.
  • Cleaning isn’t enough: Salt water may dislodge some insects but won’t sterilize the fruit.
  • Spoilage: Presence of larvae often indicates the fruit is already compromised.

✅ How to Avoid This Next Time

  1. Inspect berries carefully before buying or eating.
  2. Rinse under running water and gently rub to remove dirt.
  3. Optional: Soak in a vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) for 5–10 minutes — larvae float and bacteria reduce.
  4. Buy frozen berries — they are flash-frozen, which kills most pests.

🧠 Bottom Line

Do not eat berries with visible larvae. Discard them, check the rest of your batch, and take precautions next time to avoid contamination.

If you want, I can give a step-by-step method to safely clean berries so this doesn’t happen again. Do you want me to do that?
