Hamburger Steak with Gravy is a comforting, down-home classic — seasoned ground beef patties seared to perfection and simmered in a rich onion or mushroom gravy. It’s hearty, affordable, and best served with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up that savory sauce.

🥩🧅 Hamburger Steak with Gravy

🧾 Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1½ lbs ground beef (80/20 works best)

  • ½ small onion, finely minced

  • 1 egg

  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

  • 1 tbsp oil or butter, for searing

For the Gravy:

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
(or add 1 cup sliced mushrooms, optional)

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper to taste

🔪 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  • In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, minced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

  • Shape into 4 oval patties.

2️⃣ Sear the Steaks

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  • Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned (they don’t have to be fully cooked through yet).

  • Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter.

  • Add sliced onions (and mushrooms, if using) and sauté for 6–8 minutes until soft and lightly browned.

  • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.

  • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring, until thickened.

4️⃣ Simmer Together

  • Return patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.

  • Cover and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, until patties are cooked through and flavors meld.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Spoon over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles

  • Serve with a side of green beans, corn, or buttered rolls

✅ Tips

  • Want a smoother gravy? Blend onions before adding to broth.

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of soy sauce or a dash of hot sauce to the gravy.

  • Great for meal prep — leftovers reheat beautifully.
