French-Style Potato and Meatball Bake

Here’s a simple way to make a hearty, comforting French-inspired dish using potatoes, meatballs, and cheese.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium potatoes, boiled and sliced
  • 12–16 small meatballs (beef, pork, or a mix)
  • 1 cup grated cheese (Gruyère, Emmental, or cheddar)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1 cup cream or béchamel sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, or chives) for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven
    • Set oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Prepare the Base
    • Boil potatoes until tender, then slice into ½-inch rounds.
    • Grease a baking dish lightly with butter or oil.
  3. Layer the Ingredients
    • Arrange a layer of potato slices at the bottom.
    • Add a layer of meatballs and onions (if using).
    • Sprinkle some cheese.
    • Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
  4. Add Cream or Sauce
    • Pour cream or béchamel sauce evenly over the top.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and a little nutmeg if desired.
  5. Bake
    • Cover with foil and bake for 20–25 minutes.
    • Remove foil and bake another 10–15 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly.
  6. Garnish and Serve
    • Sprinkle with fresh herbs before serving.
    • Serve hot with a side salad or crusty bread.

✅ Tip:
For extra flavor, brown the meatballs lightly in a pan before layering, or add a drizzle of Dijon mustard between layers.

This dish is perfect as a family dinner or weekend treat—rich, filling, and full of French-inspired flavor.

If you want, I can also give a quick 30-minute version that’s just as flavorful but faster to prepare.
