🧈 Fluffy Buttery Square Biscuits
Ingredients (makes about 9 biscuits)
-
2 cups all-purpose flour
-
1 tbsp baking powder
-
1 tsp sugar
-
1 tsp salt
-
½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
-
¾ cup cold whole milk (or buttermilk for extra tang)
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a 9×9-inch square baking pan.
-
Mix dry ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. -
Cut in the butter:
Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingers, quickly cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces of butter. -
Add milk:
Pour in the cold milk and stir gently with a spatula or spoon just until the dough comes together. Don’t overmix! -
Transfer and shape:
Dump the dough into the prepared pan and gently press it down evenly with your hands or a spatula. -
Bake:
Bake for 15–18 minutes until the top is golden brown. -
Butter finish:
Immediately after baking, brush the top with melted butter for an extra rich, shiny finish. -
Slice and serve:
Let cool for a few minutes, then slice into squares and serve warm!
Tips
-
Keep your butter and milk cold — that helps create fluffy layers.
-
For cheesy biscuits, sprinkle shredded cheddar over the dough before baking or fold some into the dough.
-
Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat with a pat of butter to revive softness.
