Hamburger Steak Bake is a cozy, no-fuss casserole that layers seasoned ground beef patties with savory gravy, onions, and sometimes potatoes or cheese — like Salisbury steak meets a hearty bake. It’s classic comfort food that works great for family dinners or make-ahead meals.

🥩🧅🧀 Hamburger Steak Bake

🧾 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1½ lbs ground beef (80/20)

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

For the Bake:

  • 1 large onion, sliced

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or brown gravy)

  • ½ cup milk

  • Optional: ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)

  • Optional: 1–2 cups parboiled potato slices or mashed potatoes as a layer

🔪 Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat Oven

  • Preheat to 375°F (190°C).

  • Lightly grease a 9×13″ baking dish.

2️⃣ Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire, and seasonings.

  2. Form into 4–6 oval patties and sear in a skillet over medium-high heat until browned on both sides (they don’t need to be cooked through).

  3. Set browned patties aside.

3️⃣ Assemble the Bake

  1. Lay sliced onions on the bottom of the baking dish.

  2. Place seared hamburger patties on top.

  3. In a bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup with milk (or use prepared brown gravy).

  4. Pour the mixture over the patties and onions.

  5. Optional: Add a layer of cheese on top.

  6. If adding parboiled potato slices, layer them in before pouring sauce.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.

  • Uncover and bake an additional 10–15 minutes, or until bubbly and browned around the edges.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Spoon over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles

  • Serve with steamed green beans, buttered corn, or a side salad

🔄 Variations

  • Low-carb: Skip the potatoes and breadcrumbs; use almond flour or crushed pork rinds.

  • Southern-style: Use brown onion gravy instead of mushroom soup.

  • Tex-Mex twist: Add a little taco seasoning and top with pepper jack cheese.
