🥩🧅 Hamburger Steak with Gravy
🧾 Ingredients (Serves 4)
For the Hamburger Steaks:
-
1½ lbs ground beef (80/20 works best)
-
½ small onion, finely minced
-
1 egg
-
⅓ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
Salt & black pepper, to taste
-
1 tbsp oil or butter, for searing
For the Gravy:
-
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
(or add 1 cup sliced mushrooms, optional) -
2 tbsp butter
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt & pepper to taste
🔪 Instructions
1️⃣ Make the Patties
-
In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, minced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Shape into 4 oval patties.
2️⃣ Sear the Steaks
-
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
-
Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned (they don’t have to be fully cooked through yet).
-
Remove and set aside.
3️⃣ Make the Gravy
-
In the same skillet, melt butter.
-
Add sliced onions (and mushrooms, if using) and sauté for 6–8 minutes until soft and lightly browned.
-
Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
-
Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring, until thickened.
4️⃣ Simmer Together
-
Return patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
-
Cover and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, until patties are cooked through and flavors meld.
🍽️ Serving Ideas
-
Spoon over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles
-
Serve with a side of green beans, corn, or buttered rolls
✅ Tips
-
Want a smoother gravy? Blend onions before adding to broth.
-
For extra flavor, add a splash of soy sauce or a dash of hot sauce to the gravy.
-
Great for meal prep — leftovers reheat beautifully.
