My neighbor taught me this trick to clean green algae off siding with 0 effort. Here’s how it works.

Green algae on siding is very common, especially on the north side of homes or in humid areas. The good news: you don’t need harsh scrubbing or expensive equipment.

Here’s a safe, effective method that actually works.

Simple Algae Cleaning Solution (No Pressure Washer Needed)

What You’ll Need
1 gallon water
1 cup household bleach (5–6% sodium hypochlorite)
1 tablespoon mild dish soap
Garden sprayer or spray bottle
Garden hose
Protective gloves

Instructions

  1. Protect Plants
Lightly spray nearby plants and grass with plain water first. This helps dilute any runoff.
  2. Mix the Solution
In a bucket or garden sprayer, combine:
    • 1 gallon water
    • 1 cup bleach
    • 1 tablespoon dish soap

Do not mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.

  1. Apply
Spray the solution directly onto the green areas of the siding. Make sure the surface is dry before applying.
  2. Let It Sit
Allow it to sit for 10–15 minutes. You’ll often see the green color start fading on its own.
  3. Rinse
Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. No heavy scrubbing needed.

Why This Works

• Bleach kills algae and mold spores
• Soap helps the solution stick to the surface
• Water dilutes it to a safe but effective strength

Important Safety Tips

• Wear gloves and old clothes
• Avoid spraying on windy days
• Never mix bleach with other chemicals
• Do not let solution dry completely on siding
• Avoid using high-pressure washers on vinyl siding, as they can force water behind panels

Alternative (Plant-Safer Option)

If you prefer something gentler:
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, spray, let sit 20–30 minutes, then rinse. It may take a second application.

Prevention Tips

• Trim back shrubs to improve airflow
• Clean gutters regularly
• Install zinc or copper strips near roofline to reduce regrowth
• Wash siding once per year

If you tell me what type of siding you have (vinyl, wood, brick, stucco), I can tailor the safest method for that surface.
