3 important actions to remember in an emergency when you’re alone

Being alone during an emergency can feel overwhelming — but remembering a few core actions can save your life.

Here are 3 critical things to do in almost any emergency:


1️⃣ Stay Calm & Assess Quickly

Your first weapon is control of your mind.

  • Take 2–3 slow, deep breaths.
  • Identify the type of emergency (medical, fire, break-in, accident).
  • Check for immediate danger (fire, gas smell, bleeding, unsafe surroundings).

Panic clouds judgment. Even 10 seconds of controlled breathing improves decision-making.


2️⃣ Call for Help Immediately

Even if you think you can handle it.

  • Call emergency services (911 in the U.S., 112 in many countries).
  • Put the phone on speaker so your hands stay free.
  • Clearly state:
    • Your location
    • What happened
    • If you’re injured

If you cannot speak, many regions allow texting emergency services.

If you’re in an apartment or building:

  • Unlock the door if safe.
  • Turn on lights to help responders find you.

3️⃣ Do the Most Life-Saving Action First

Focus on the biggest threat:

🩸 If Bleeding Heavily:

  • Apply firm, direct pressure.
  • Elevate if possible.
  • Use cloth, shirt, towel — anything clean.

🔥 If There’s Fire:

  • Get out immediately.
  • Stay low (smoke rises).
  • Don’t grab belongings.

💓 If You Feel Heart Attack Symptoms:

  • Call emergency services.
  • Sit upright.
  • Chew aspirin (if not allergic and advised in your country).

🧠 If Choking:

  • Perform self-Heimlich (use a chair or countertop edge).

Golden Rule:

You first. Call first. Stop the biggest threat first.
