A rich, velvety cream sauce poured over tender potatoes and baked until golden and bubbling — this cozy winter casserole is pure comfort in every bite.

🛒 Ingredients (Serves 6)

For the casserole:

  • 2 lbs (900g) Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp dried thyme (or 1 tsp fresh)
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional but recommended)

Optional add-ins:

  • ½ cup caramelized onions
  • ½ cup cooked, crumbled bacon
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

🔪 Instructions

1️⃣ Prep the Potatoes

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Wash, peel (optional), and thinly slice the potatoes about ⅛ inch thick for even cooking.

2️⃣ Make the Creamy Pour-Over

In a saucepan over medium heat:

  • Melt butter
  • Add garlic and sauté 30 seconds until fragrant
  • Pour in cream and milk
  • Stir in salt, pepper, thyme, and nutmeg
  • Simmer gently for 3–4 minutes (do not boil)

Remove from heat.

3️⃣ Assemble

  • Lightly butter a glass casserole dish (9×13 inch works well).
  • Layer half of the potatoes evenly.
  • Sprinkle with half the shredded cheese.
  • Add remaining potatoes on top.
  • Slowly pour the warm cream mixture evenly over everything.
  • Finish with remaining cheese and Parmesan on top.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake another 20–25 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  • Potatoes should be fork-tender.

5️⃣ Rest & Serve

Let the casserole rest 10–15 minutes before serving to thicken.
Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

🧀 Pro Tips

  • For extra crispiness, broil 2–3 minutes at the end.
  • Use a mandoline for evenly sliced potatoes.
  • Make it ahead: assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate before baking.

If you’d like, I can also give you a version with chicken added to make it a complete one-dish meal.
