Most folks get this wrong. What is the drawer underneath stove actually used for?.

Posted on March 2, 2026 by Admin

Most people use that bottom drawer for storing pans… but that’s often not what it was designed for.

What the drawer under your stove is actually for depends on the type of range you have.

🔥 1️⃣ Warming Drawer (Most Common in Newer Ovens)

Many modern gas and electric ranges have a warming drawer.

✔ Purpose:

  • Keeps cooked food warm before serving
  • Maintains temperature without overcooking
  • Useful during holidays or large meals

Typical temperature range:

  • About 80–200°F (27–93°C)

You’ll usually see:

  • Temperature controls labeled “Warm”
  • Settings on the oven panel

If it has controls, it’s almost certainly a warming drawer.

🔥 2️⃣ Broiler Drawer (Common in Gas Ovens)

In many gas ranges, the bottom drawer is actually a broiler.

✔ Purpose:

  • High, direct heat from below
  • Used for:
    • Melting cheese
    • Browning casseroles
    • Toasting
    • Quick searing

If you see a visible flame element inside when opened, it’s a broiler — not storage.

🔥 3️⃣ Storage Drawer (Basic Models)

Some ovens truly do have a storage drawer.

✔ Purpose:

  • Store baking sheets or pans
  • No heating element
  • No temperature control

If there’s no heat source and no controls, it’s likely just storage.

⚠️ Why This Matters

Using it incorrectly can:

  • Damage cookware
  • Melt plastic items
  • Create fire hazards
  • Block ventilation

Many people unknowingly store plastic lids in a broiler drawer — which can be dangerous.

✅ How to Know for Sure

The fastest way:

  • Check your oven model number
  • Look it up in the manufacturer’s manual

Or tell me:

  • Gas or electric?
  • Do you see heating elements?
  • Any temperature knobs labeled “Warm”?

I can help you figure out exactly what yours is.
