Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

Posted on March 11, 2026 by Admin

Cleaning bed pillows regularly is key to keeping them white, fresh, and free from sweat, dust mites, and odors. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get them looking and smelling like new:

🛏️ How to Clean Dirty Pillows

1️⃣ Check the Care Label

  • Most synthetic and down pillows can be machine washed.
  • Some memory foam or latex pillows need spot cleaning or hand washing.

2️⃣ Machine Washing (for synthetic or down)

  1. Use a gentle detergent. Avoid bleach unless the pillow is very yellowed.
  2. Wash two pillows at a time to balance the machine.
  3. Select warm water (or follow label instructions).
  4. Optional: Add ½ cup baking soda to the wash to help whiten and deodorize.

3️⃣ Rinse and Spin Well

  • Rinse twice to remove all detergent.
  • Spin to remove excess water, which helps pillows dry faster and fluff better.

4️⃣ Drying

  1. Place in a dryer on low or medium heat.
  2. Add a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls—they help fluff the pillow.
  3. Make sure pillows are completely dry to prevent mold and odor.

5️⃣ Quick Freshen Between Washes

  • Sprinkle baking soda on the pillow and let sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum.
  • Lightly spritz with a fabric-safe essential oil mix for a sweet scent.

💡 Extra Tip:

  • Wash pillows every 3–6 months.
  • Pillowcases should be washed weekly to reduce dirt and oils.
