Turn On Your Headlights for 10 Seconds Before Driving to Save Money — Does This Trick Really Work?

You may have heard a tip suggesting that drivers should turn on their headlights for about 10 seconds before starting the car to save money or protect the vehicle. This advice is often shared online, but the truth is more nuanced.

Where This Idea Came From

The tip originally applied to older vehicles, particularly those with carburetors rather than modern fuel injection systems. The idea was that turning on the headlights would:

  • Draw a small amount of power from the battery
  • “Warm up” the battery slightly
  • Help stabilize the electrical system before starting the engine

However, this theory mainly applied to very old cars built decades ago.

Why It Usually Isn’t Necessary Today

Most modern vehicles use advanced fuel-injection systems and electronic control units that automatically manage the starting process. Because of this, turning on headlights beforehand generally does not provide any real benefit for newer cars.

Modern car batteries and systems are designed to handle starting loads without extra steps.

When It Might Help Slightly

In extremely cold weather, some drivers believe briefly drawing power from the battery (for example, turning on headlights for a few seconds) may help the battery become slightly more active before starting. But the effect is minimal and not essential.

A better strategy in cold weather is to:

  • Keep your battery well maintained
  • Park in a garage or sheltered area when possible
  • Ensure the battery is fully charged

What Actually Saves Money in Car Maintenance

Instead of relying on old tricks, these habits are more effective:

  • Regular oil changes
  • Keeping tires properly inflated
  • Maintaining a healthy battery
  • Driving smoothly and avoiding hard acceleration

💡 Bottom Line:
Turning on your headlights for a few seconds before starting the car is mostly an outdated tip for older vehicles. For modern cars, proper maintenance and good driving habits are far more important for saving money and keeping your vehicle running smoothly.
