At what temperature should bed linen be washed? Many people make this mistake.

Posted on March 15, 2026 by Admin

When it comes to washing bed linen, the temperature matters for cleanliness, hygiene, and fabric care. Many people get it wrong, either washing too cold (not killing germs) or too hot (damaging fabric).

1. Recommended washing temperatures

  • Cotton or durable fabrics: 60°C (140°F) is ideal.
    • Kills dust mites, bacteria, and allergens.
    • Removes body oils and sweat effectively.
  • Synthetic fabrics (polyester, blends): 40°C (104°F) is usually sufficient.
    • Protects fabric while still cleaning.
  • Delicate fabrics (silk, satin, embroidered linen): 30°C (86°F) or hand wash.
    • Avoids shrinkage, color fading, and damage.

2. Common mistake

  • Many people wash all bedding at 30–40°C, thinking it’s gentle.
  • This may not kill dust mites or bacteria, especially if someone is ill or has allergies.

3. Extra tips

  • Wash pillowcases and sheets weekly to prevent buildup of sweat, oils, and allergens.
  • Use hot water occasionally for deep cleaning, but check care labels first.
  • Dry thoroughly—dust mites thrive in damp environments.

✅ Bottom line:

  • 60°C for cotton ensures hygiene.
  • 40°C for synthetics, 30°C for delicate fabrics.
  • Avoid washing everything at low temperature only; it’s a common hygiene mistake.
