Does anyone know what kind of bug this is? Just spotted it on my child’s scalp…

If you’ve found a bug on your child’s scalp, the most common cause is head lice (scientifically called Head louse).

What It Likely Is

Head lice:

  • Tiny insects (about the size of a sesame seed)
  • Grayish, tan, or brown
  • Move quickly and cling to hair near the scalp
  • Lay eggs (nits) that stick firmly to hair strands

Signs to Check

  • Frequent itching of the scalp
  • Small white or yellowish eggs attached to hair (won’t brush off easily)
  • Red bumps or irritation from scratching

What To Do Right Away

  1. Confirm it’s lice
Use a fine-tooth comb and good lighting to look closely at the scalp, especially behind ears and near the neck.
  2. Treat promptly
    • Use a medicated lice shampoo (from a pharmacy)
    • Follow instructions carefully
  3. Comb out nits
    • Use a lice comb daily for several days
  4. Clean personal items
    • Wash bedding, hats, and pillowcases in hot water
    • Avoid sharing combs or hair accessories

Important

  • Lice are common in children and not related to poor hygiene
  • They do not spread disease, but they do spread easily through close contact

If you can, describe the bug (color, size, wings or not), or share a photo—I can help you confirm exactly what it is, since occasionally it could be something else like dandruff flakes, mites, or a different insect.
