Ingredients (per potato)

  • 1 large russet potato
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Optional toppings: butter, sour cream, chives, shredded cheese, bacon bits

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Wash and dry the potatoes thoroughly.
  3. Poke holes with a fork a few times to let steam escape.
  4. Rub with olive oil and sprinkle salt all over the skin.
  5. Place directly on oven rack or a baking sheet for 45–60 minutes, depending on size.
    • Test doneness by inserting a fork—it should slide in easily.
  6. Remove and let cool for 5 minutes.
  7. Cut open and fluff the inside with a fork.
  8. Add toppings of your choice and serve hot.

Tips for Perfection

  • For extra crispy skin, bake directly on the oven rack without foil.
  • Russet potatoes work best because of their high starch content.
  • You can finish under the broiler for 1–2 minutes for ultra-crispy skin.
