What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

Posted on April 11, 2026 by Admin

Blood pressure doesn’t have a completely different “normal” for every age anymore—modern medical guidelines focus more on ranges for all adults, with only small variations for children and older people.

Here’s a clear breakdown 👇

🩺 Normal Blood Pressure by Age

👶 Children (1–12 years)

Normal BP depends on age, height, and sex, but typical ranges are:

  • 90–110 / 55–75 mmHg
  • Younger children = lower values
  • Older children = slightly higher

👦 Teenagers (13–18 years)

  • 110–120 / 65–80 mmHg
  • Very close to adult levels

🧑 Adults (18–59 years)

According to the American Heart Association:

  • 🟢 Normal: below 120 / 80 mmHg
  • 🟡 Elevated: 120–129 / <80
  • 🟠 High (Stage 1): 130–139 / 80–89
  • 🔴 High (Stage 2): 140+ / 90+

👴 Older Adults (60+ years)

  • Ideal still: below 120/80
  • Often considered acceptable (depending on health):
    • 120–130 / 70–80 mmHg

⚠️ Doctors may allow slightly higher readings if lowering it causes dizziness or falls.

🧠 Important Truth People Get Wrong

👉 “Blood pressure naturally gets high with age, so it’s normal.”

❌ This is a myth.

While BP can rise with age, healthy targets still stay close to 120/80 because higher levels increase risk of:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney damage

⚠️ When to worry

  • Consistently above 130/80 → needs attention
  • Above 140/90 → likely hypertension
  • Very low (below 90/60) with symptoms → also needs check

✅ Simple Rule to Remember

  • 🟢 120 / 80 = ideal
  • 🟡 120–129 = warning zone
  • 🔴 130+ = high
