Seeing white “wiggling things” come out of berries after soaking in salt water is usually unpleasant but not uncommon.
Most often, they are:
- Fruit fly larvae (tiny worms)
- Insect eggs that were already on the fruit
This can happen especially in soft fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
Related condition: Myiasis (rare and usually not dangerous when accidental ingestion is minimal)
🧠 Why this happens
- Fruit flies lay eggs on ripening fruit
- Eggs are invisible at the store
- Salt water makes larvae come out because it irritates them
👉 So the salt water didn’t create them—it just made them visible.
🥗 Should you throw the berries away?
✔ You can keep them if:
- Berries are still firm and fresh
- Only a few larvae appeared
- No bad smell or mold
➡️ Rinse thoroughly and use quickly
❌ You should throw them away if:
- They are mushy or moldy
- There are many larvae
- They smell off or look decomposed
🧼 How to clean berries properly
- Soak in cold water + salt or vinegar for 10–15 minutes
- Swirl gently
- Rinse well under clean water
- Dry before storing
⚠️ Is it dangerous if eaten?
- In most cases, accidentally swallowing a few is not harmful
- But it is understandably unpleasant
🧠 Simple truth
👉 You didn’t “cause” bugs with salt water
👉 You revealed insects that were already present
✅ Bottom line
- ✔ Slight infestation → wash and use
- ❌ Heavy infestation or spoilage → discard
If you want, I can show you how to store berries so this almost never happens again 👍
