8 Common Medications You Should Avoid Taking in Excess to Protect Your Kidneys

Posted on April 18, 2026 by Admin

That headline is a bit alarmist. There aren’t “8 medications you must avoid in excess” for everyone—but it’s true that some commonly used drugs can stress the kidneys if overused, misused, or taken long-term without supervision.

Your kidneys filter waste and drugs, so risk depends on dose, duration, hydration, and existing kidney health.

🧠 Medications that can affect kidneys if overused or misused

1. Pain relievers (NSAIDs)

Examples: ibuprofen, naproxen

  • Can reduce blood flow to kidneys when overused
  • Higher risk in older adults, dehydration, or long-term use

2. Certain antibiotics

Examples: aminoglycosides (gentamicin), vancomycin

  • Can be toxic to kidney tissue at high doses or prolonged use
  • Usually monitored in hospitals

3. Diuretics (“water pills”)

Examples: furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide

  • Change fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Can strain kidneys if dehydration occurs

4. ACE inhibitors / ARBs (blood pressure meds)

Examples: lisinopril, losartan

  • Often kidney-protective long-term, but may temporarily affect kidney function when starting or dehydrated
  • Need monitoring

5. Lithium (mood stabilizer)

  • Long-term use can affect kidney concentrating ability
  • Requires regular blood level checks

6. Certain antivirals

Example: acyclovir (high doses)

  • Can crystallize in kidneys if not well hydrated

7. Contrast dye (used in imaging scans)

  • Can temporarily stress kidneys in vulnerable patients
  • Risk reduced with hydration and screening

8. Overuse of supplements/herbal products

  • Some “natural” products can still be kidney-stressing
  • Especially in high doses or contaminated products

⚠️ Key reality check

  • Most of these medications are safe when used correctly and monitored
  • Kidney risk usually comes from:
    • Overuse
    • High doses
    • Dehydration
    • Pre-existing kidney disease

🧾 Bottom line

There are no “forbidden medications for kidneys” in normal use, but certain drugs—especially painkillers and some antibiotics—can cause problems if misused or unmonitored.
