How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

Posted on April 22, 2026 by Admin

What people call “inner ear crystals” usually refers to tiny calcium particles in the inner ear that shift out of place and confuse your balance system. This condition is known as Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)—one of the most common causes of vertigo, especially in adults and older people.

The good news: in many cases, it can be treated with simple head-positioning maneuvers.

🌀 Why vertigo happens in BPPV

Inside your inner ear are small calcium carbonate “crystals” (otoconia). When they move into the wrong canal:

  • your brain gets false signals about movement
  • you feel spinning or dizziness when changing head position
  • episodes are usually brief but intense

🧭 Most effective treatment: repositioning maneuvers

1. Epley Maneuver (most commonly used)

This is the standard treatment for many cases of BPPV.

It works by guiding the crystals back to their correct location using a sequence of head movements.

Typical steps (for right ear involvement):

  1. Sit on a bed, turn head 45° to the right
  2. Lie back quickly with head slightly hanging off the bed
  3. Wait ~30–60 seconds
  4. Turn head 90° to the left
  5. Turn body onto left side
  6. Slowly sit up

⚠️ It’s best to learn it once from a doctor or physiotherapist before doing it at home.

2. Semont maneuver (alternative option)

A faster movement technique used in some cases, usually guided by a clinician.

3. Brandt-Daroff exercises (for home practice)

Helpful if symptoms keep coming back:

  • repeated sitting and lying movements
  • done several times daily
  • helps the brain adapt and reduce dizziness over time

🧘‍♂️ What helps reduce vertigo symptoms

  • Move slowly when changing positions (especially getting out of bed)
  • Avoid sudden head turns during active symptoms
  • Stay hydrated
  • Sleep with head slightly elevated
  • Take breaks if symptoms trigger dizziness

🚨 When to seek medical care

Get checked if you have:

  • persistent vertigo not improving with maneuvers
  • hearing loss or ringing in one ear
  • severe headache or neurological symptoms
  • imbalance that is constant (not positional)

These may suggest other conditions beyond BPPV.

🧾 Key takeaway

  • “Ear crystals” are real but harmless
  • The main issue is their position, not damage
  • Simple head-positioning maneuvers often resolve symptoms quickly
  • Recurrence is common but manageable
