Don’t ignore constant throat phlegm. Find the cause here… See more

Posted on April 22, 2026 by Admin

Constant throat phlegm (mucus in the throat that keeps coming back or feels “stuck”) is common, but it’s not something to ignore if it persists for weeks. It’s usually a symptom of an underlying issue rather than a disease itself.

Here are the most common causes:

1) Post-nasal drip (very common)

Mucus from the nose/sinuses drips down the back of the throat.

  • Allergies (dust, pollen, smoke)
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Frequent colds
Clues: need to clear throat often, worse in morning, nasal blockage or sneezing.

2) Acid reflux / LPR (silent reflux)

Stomach acid irritates the throat without obvious heartburn.

  • Known as laryngopharyngeal reflux
Clues: lump-in-throat feeling, hoarseness, chronic throat clearing, worse after meals or lying down.

3) Irritants

  • Smoking or vaping
  • Air pollution, dust, chemicals
  • Dry air or AC exposure
Clues: symptoms improve when away from exposure.

4) Chronic throat irritation or infection

  • Long-term mild infections
  • Tonsil inflammation or tonsil stones
Clues: bad breath, sore throat, visible debris in tonsils.

5) Asthma or airway inflammation

Sometimes mucus production increases with airway sensitivity.
Clues: cough, wheezing, chest tightness.

6) Less common causes

  • Certain medications (like some blood pressure drugs)
  • Dehydration (thicker mucus)
  • Rarely, more serious throat or lung conditions if persistent with warning signs

When it needs attention

You should get checked if you have:

  • Symptoms lasting >3–4 weeks
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Blood in mucus
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent hoarseness
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain

What usually helps (depending on cause)

  • Hydration (thin mucus)
  • Steam inhalation or warm fluids
  • Saline nasal rinses (for post-nasal drip)
  • Allergy control (if relevant)
  • Avoid late meals, spicy/fatty foods, caffeine (if reflux suspected)
  • Avoid smoking/irritants

If you want, describe your symptoms a bit more (morning vs all day, any heartburn, nasal issues, smoking exposure, how long it’s been going on). I can narrow down the most likely cause for you.
