Here’s a simple, effective way to clean dirty bed pillows so they come out white, fresh, and smelling sweet again:
1. Check the care label first
Before anything, look at the pillow tag. Most cotton, polyester, and down/feather pillows are machine washable, but memory foam usually is not.
2. Pre-treat stains
If there are yellow sweat stains or spots:
- Mix a paste of baking soda + a little water
- Or use a small amount of liquid detergent
- Gently rub into stained areas and let sit for 15–30 minutes
3. Wash two pillows at a time
This helps balance the machine:
- Use warm water (unless label says cold)
- Add:
- Regular laundry detergent
- ½ cup baking soda (removes odor and brightens)
- 1 cup white vinegar in rinse cycle (kills smell and bacteria)
Choose a gentle or bulky cycle.
4. Extra rinse is important
Run an extra rinse cycle to make sure all detergent is removed—this helps avoid stiffness and buildup.
5. Dry completely (very important)
- Tumble dry on low heat
- Add clean tennis balls or dryer balls to fluff pillows and prevent clumping
- Dry until 100% dry inside (can take 1–2 hours or more)
👉 Any leftover moisture can cause mildew smell.
6. Sun freshening (optional but great)
If possible, leave pillows in direct sunlight for a few hours. Sunlight naturally whitens and deodorizes.
7. Keep them smelling fresh longer
- Use pillow protectors
- Wash pillows every 3–6 months
- Air them out monthly in sunlight
If you want, I can also give you a method specifically for yellow-stained pillows or memory foam pillows (they need different care).
