Black mold on a refrigerator gasket (the rubber door seal) is common because it stays damp and traps food residue. You can usually clean it in a few minutes if it’s not deeply embedded.
What you need
- Warm water
- Dish soap
- White vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide
- Old toothbrush or soft brush
- Microfiber cloth / paper towels
- Cotton swabs (for tight grooves)
Fast method (5–10 minutes)
1. Mix a quick cleaning solution
Use either:
- 1:1 white vinegar + water, or
- Warm soapy water (for light mold)
Vinegar works better for mold removal.
2. Pull the gasket open
Gently stretch the rubber seal to expose the inner folds—mold usually hides deep inside the grooves.
3. Scrub the mold
Dip a toothbrush in the solution and scrub:
- All visible black spots
- Inside folds and corners
- Around the entire door frame seal
Use cotton swabs for tight areas.
4. Wipe clean
Wipe everything with a damp cloth to remove loosened mold and residue.
5. Disinfect (important step)
Apply one of these:
- Straight white vinegar (leave for 5–10 minutes), or
- Hydrogen peroxide (apply and let sit for ~5 minutes)
This kills remaining spores.
6. Dry completely
Wipe dry with a clean towel. Leave the fridge door open for a few minutes to air dry fully.
If mold keeps coming back
- Check fridge temperature (should be ~3–5°C / 37–41°F)
- Clean spills quickly inside the fridge
- Keep gasket dry after cleaning
- Replace gasket if cracks or deep black staining remain
Important warning
Avoid mixing bleach with vinegar or other cleaners—it creates toxic fumes. Bleach can be used alone, but vinegar is usually safer and effective for household mold.
If you want, I can also give a super-strong deep-clean method for stubborn black mold that doesn’t come off easily.
