Found in the kitchen of our new house: something the size of an oven rack. Any ideas? There’s no way I’m throwing this away, I’d better know what it is

That could be a few different things—“oven rack–sized” is a surprisingly common format in kitchens. Before guessing too wildly, a couple of quick clues would help: is it flat like a grid, does it have sides or legs, and is it heavy (cast iron) or light (wire)?

Here are some likely candidates:

  • Extra oven rack or broiler tray insert – Sometimes previous owners leave spare racks that fit different oven positions or even a different model.
  • Cooling rack (oversized) – Used for baking, especially for cooling batches of cookies or draining fried food. These are usually lighter wire grids.
  • Roasting rack – Sits inside a roasting pan to elevate meat. Often slightly curved or has small feet.
  • Dish drying rack insert – Some older or custom setups had large flat inserts that sat over sinks.
  • Grill grate – If it’s heavier and thicker metal, it might belong to a barbecue or stovetop grill rather than the oven.
  • Shelf from a fridge or cabinet – Wire shelves from older refrigerators or pantry units can look very similar to oven racks.

If you can share a photo or describe details like:

  • exact dimensions
  • material (thin wire vs thick bars)
  • any bends, handles, or feet

…I can narrow it down pretty precisely.
