How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

Posted on April 26, 2026 by Admin

What people call “ear crystals” are actually tiny calcium particles in the inner ear (otoconia) that can shift out of place and trigger vertigo. The condition is called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

When these particles move into the wrong part of the inner ear, they confuse your balance system and cause spinning sensations (vertigo), especially when you turn your head or get up quickly.

The good news: in many cases, this can be improved with specific head-positioning maneuvers.

🌀 How to “reposition” inner ear crystals (most effective method)

🛏️ Epley Maneuver (most commonly used)

This is often done for one affected ear (usually the posterior canal).

General idea:

  1. Sit on a bed and turn your head 45° toward the affected side
  2. Lie back quickly with head slightly hanging off the bed
  3. Hold for ~30–60 seconds
  4. Turn head to the opposite side
  5. Roll onto that side and hold
  6. Slowly sit back up

This helps guide the crystals back to where they belong.

👉 It often reduces symptoms in a few sessions, sometimes immediately.

🧘 Other common maneuvers

  • Semont maneuver (faster head movements)
  • Brandt-Daroff exercises (repeated training at home)

These are sometimes used if symptoms persist or as follow-up exercises.

⚠️ Important safety notes

  • Do NOT do these if you have neck/back injuries unless a doctor approves
  • Incorrect technique can worsen dizziness temporarily
  • Best results come from confirmation of the affected ear first

🧠 What else helps reduce vertigo symptoms

💧 1. Stay hydrated

Dehydration can worsen dizziness.

🛌 2. Move slowly

Avoid sudden head turns or getting up too quickly.

🍺 3. Limit alcohol

It can affect inner ear balance signals.

🧘 4. Vestibular exercises

Help the brain adapt over time.

🚨 When to see a doctor urgently

Vertigo is NOT always BPPV. Get checked if you have:

  • Severe headache
  • Weakness, numbness, or slurred speech
  • Continuous vertigo not triggered by movement
  • Hearing loss or ear pain

These could indicate other conditions beyond BPPV.

🧭 Bottom line

“Ear crystals” don’t need to be dissolved or removed—they usually need to be repositioned using specific head maneuvers like the Epley maneuver. Most cases improve significantly once the correct ear is treated.

If you want, tell me when your vertigo happens (turning in bed, looking up, standing, etc.), and I can help you figure out which ear and which maneuver is most likely to work for you.
