12 signs that your blood sugar is too high

Posted on April 21, 2026 by Admin

High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is most commonly linked with diabetes, especially Type 2 Diabetes, but it can also happen temporarily due to stress, illness, or certain medications.

Here are 12 common signs that your blood sugar may be too high:

1. Frequent urination

When glucose builds up in the blood, the kidneys try to remove the excess through urine, making you go to the bathroom more often than usual.

2. Excessive thirst

Because of fluid loss from frequent urination, your body becomes dehydrated and you feel constantly thirsty.

3. Fatigue or low energy

Cells can’t use glucose properly without enough insulin, so your body feels tired even after resting.

4. Blurry vision

High blood sugar can cause fluid changes in the eyes, affecting your ability to focus clearly.

5. Increased hunger

Even with enough food intake, your body isn’t effectively using glucose for energy, triggering hunger signals.

6. Headaches

Fluctuating blood sugar levels can affect brain function and cause persistent headaches.

7. Slow healing of cuts or wounds

High glucose levels can damage blood vessels and reduce blood flow, slowing down healing.

8. Dry mouth and dry skin

Dehydration from excess urination can leave your mouth and skin feeling unusually dry.

9. Unexplained weight loss

Despite eating normally, the body may start breaking down fat and muscle for energy.

10. Frequent infections

High blood sugar can weaken the immune system, making infections (like skin or yeast infections) more common.

11. Tingling or numbness in hands and feet

Nerve irritation or early nerve damage (neuropathy) can cause this sensation over time.

12. Difficulty concentrating (“brain fog”)

Fluctuating glucose levels can affect mental clarity and focus.

When to be concerned

Occasional mild symptoms can happen for many reasons, but persistent or worsening signs may suggest a blood sugar problem. If symptoms are strong or sudden—especially extreme thirst, confusion, vomiting, or rapid breathing—seek medical care urgently.

If you want, I can also explain normal vs. high blood sugar ranges or how to check glucose at home.
