5 things you should never put under the kitchen sink

Posted on April 18, 2026 by Admin

The space under the kitchen sink is convenient, but it’s also one of the worst places for storage because it’s humid, warm, and prone to leaks. That combination can damage items or even create safety risks.

Here are 5 things you should never store there:

🚫 1. Food items (especially dry food or potatoes/onions)

Moisture and possible pests make this area unsafe for food storage. Even sealed packaging can degrade faster in damp conditions.

🚫 2. Cleaning chemicals that react with each other

Storing multiple cleaners (like bleach, ammonia, acids) close together increases risk if they leak or mix accidentally—this can create toxic fumes.

🚫 3. Paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, napkins)

They absorb moisture easily and can become:

  • soggy
  • moldy
  • unusable

🚫 4. Electrical appliances or batteries

Items like spare batteries, chargers, or small appliances can be damaged by:

  • moisture
  • corrosion
  • potential leaks from plumbing

🚫 5. Medications or supplements

Bathrooms and sinks create unstable temperature and humidity, which can:

  • reduce effectiveness
  • shorten shelf life
  • degrade active ingredients

🧠 Better uses for under-sink space

It’s best suited for:

  • sealed cleaning supplies (stored safely and upright)
  • trash bags
  • durable plastic bins for organization

If you want, I can suggest a safe under-sink organization setup that prevents leaks and keeps everything easy to access.
