A month before a stroke, your body warns you: 10 signs not to ignore

Posted on April 29, 2026 by Admin

A stroke can happen suddenly, but in some cases the body may give warning signs days or even weeks beforehand—especially with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a “mini-stroke.” These symptoms don’t always mean a stroke will definitely happen, but they are serious red flags that need urgent medical attention.

Here are 10 warning signs that may appear before a stroke:

1. Sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side)

Weakness in the face, arm, or leg—often just one side of the body—is one of the most common early warning signs.

2. Brief episodes of speech difficulty

Slurred speech, trouble finding words, or suddenly not understanding others can come and go before a major stroke.

3. Short-term vision problems

Blurred vision, double vision, or temporary loss of vision in one or both eyes.

4. Unexplained dizziness or loss of balance

Feeling unsteady, dizzy, or having difficulty walking without a clear reason.

5. Sudden severe headache

A “thunderclap” headache with no known cause, especially if different from usual headaches.

6. Confusion or trouble understanding

Sudden mental confusion, difficulty focusing, or not recognizing familiar things or people.

7. Temporary numbness or tingling

Especially in the face, hands, or legs, even if it lasts only a few minutes.

8. Brief loss of coordination

Dropping objects, stumbling, or clumsiness that appears suddenly and then resolves.

9. Sudden fatigue or weakness

Unusual exhaustion that appears out of nowhere and doesn’t match your activity level.

10. Mini-stroke (TIA) episodes

Short-lived stroke-like symptoms that fully resolve within minutes to hours—but are a major warning that a full stroke may follow soon.

Important note

These symptoms may come and go, but even if they disappear, they should never be ignored. A TIA is often a “warning stroke,” and many people who experience one may have a full stroke within days or weeks if not treated.

If you or someone else experiences any of these signs, seeking emergency medical care immediately can be life-saving.
