Baking soda removes grease from all these areas – the only way it works is if you prepare it this way!

Posted on April 23, 2026 by Admin

That headline is a bit exaggerated — baking soda can help with grease, but it’s not a magical all-surface degreaser, and it only works well when used the right way and on the right type of grime.

Here’s what’s actually going on and how to use it properly:

Why baking soda works on grease

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is mildly alkaline and slightly abrasive. That means:

  • It helps break down acidic or oily grease
  • It can physically scrub away stuck residue without harsh chemicals

But it’s not strong enough on its own for heavy, baked-on kitchen grease unless you activate it with moisture and friction.

The “correct way” to prepare it for grease removal

1. Baking soda paste (most effective method)

This is what those viral claims usually refer to.

How to make it:

  • 2–3 tablespoons baking soda
  • A small amount of water (just enough to form a thick paste)

How to use it:

  • Spread on greasy surfaces (stove, oven door, pans, tiles)
  • Let it sit 10–20 minutes
  • Scrub with a sponge or brush
  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth

👉 This works because the paste clings to grease instead of sliding off like dry powder.

2. Boosted cleaning (for tougher grease)

If grease is stubborn:

  • Apply baking soda paste first
  • Then spray a little vinegar or warm soapy water

This creates fizzing that helps lift residue, but the real cleaning still comes from scrubbing and the alkaline action.

Where it works well

  • Stove tops (light to moderate grease)
  • Oven doors (surface grime)
  • Kitchen tiles and backsplash
  • Pots and pans (not non-stick heavy scrubbing)
  • Sink grease stains

Where it doesn’t work well

  • Heavy engine grease or industrial oil
  • Deep oven carbon buildup (needs stronger degreasers)
  • Some delicate surfaces (it can be too abrasive)

Bottom line

The “secret” isn’t magic baking soda — it’s:
baking soda + water = paste + time + scrubbing

That combination is what actually makes grease easier to remove.

If you want, tell me the exact area you’re trying to clean (kitchen stove, car parts, bathroom tiles, etc.), and I’ll give you a more targeted method.
