When a heart stops, the situation is cardiac arrest—and the first few minutes are critical. If someone suddenly collapses and is unresponsive, here are 3 simple steps that can save a life:
1) Check and call for help immediately
Tap the person and shout: “Are you okay?” If there is no response and they are not breathing normally, call emergency services right away.
In Pakistan (including Punjab), you can call Rescue 1122.
2) Start chest compressions (CPR)
Place the heel of your hand in the center of the chest, put your other hand on top, and push hard and fast:
- About 100–120 compressions per minute
- Push at least 5–6 cm deep
- Let the chest fully rise between pushes
Keep going without stopping.
3) Use an AED if available
If there is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), turn it on and follow the voice instructions. It can analyze the heart rhythm and deliver a shock if needed. Then continue CPR immediately.
The key idea: don’t wait, don’t hesitate, and don’t worry about doing it perfectly—doing something is far better than doing nothing.
