Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

Posted on March 28, 2026 by Admin
Cleaning your bed pillows regularly is important not only for hygiene, but also for keeping them fresh, white, and smelling sweet. Here’s a simple and effective way to clean your pillows at home:

How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Keep Them Fresh

1. Check the Care Label

  • Always check the care instructions on the pillow to ensure you’re following any special washing guidelines.

2. Gather Your Supplies

  • Laundry detergent (preferably liquid)
  • Baking soda (helps remove odors and freshen up pillows)
  • White vinegar (to soften and deodorize)
  • Optional: Essential oils for a pleasant scent
  • Washing machine (if pillow is machine washable) or bathtub for hand washing

3. Pre-Treat the Pillows

  • Spot clean stains: If there are visible stains, apply a small amount of laundry detergent or a paste of baking soda and water to the stained area. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes before washing.
  • Deodorize with baking soda: Sprinkle a little baking soda on the pillow and let it sit for 15–30 minutes to absorb odors.

4. Wash the Pillows

Machine Wash:

  • Place pillows in the washing machine: Wash two pillows at a time (to balance the load).
  • Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the detergent compartment to help remove odors.
  • Use gentle cycle and warm water (avoid hot water as it may damage the fabric).
  • Add a little white vinegar (about 1/4 cup) during the rinse cycle to soften and remove soap residue.

Hand Wash (for delicate pillows):

  • Fill a bathtub or large basin with warm water.
  • Add laundry detergent and baking soda.
  • Soak the pillows for 15–20 minutes, gently scrubbing with your hands.
  • Rinse thoroughly with cold water until no detergent remains.

5. Dry the Pillows

  • Machine dry on low heat with a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls to fluff the pillows as they dry.
  • Alternatively, air dry them by laying them flat in a well-ventilated area. Be sure to flip them regularly to ensure they dry evenly.
  • Make sure the pillows are completely dry to avoid mold or mildew.

6. Freshen Up

  • After drying, give the pillows a good fluffing and, if you like, spritz them with a light spray of lavender or essential oils mixed with water to give them a fresh, pleasant scent.

💡 Additional Tips:

  • Wash pillows every 3–6 months to keep them fresh.
  • If your pillows still smell musty after washing, try leaving them in the sun for a few hours to eliminate lingering odors.
  • To keep pillows extra fresh between washes, consider using pillow protectors or regularly washing pillowcases.

🧠 Bottom Line

With the right cleaning routine, your pillows will stay white, soft, and smelling sweet—making bedtime even more comfortable and inviting!
