What people call “inner ear crystals” are usually tiny calcium particles that move into the wrong part of the inner ear and trigger vertigo.
🧠 The condition
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
It causes short episodes of:
- spinning sensation (vertigo)
- dizziness when turning in bed or looking up
- imbalance
🌀 How to “put the crystals back” (most effective treatment)
🔹 1. Epley Maneuver (most common)
Epley maneuver
How it’s done (for right ear problem):
- Sit on bed, turn head 45° to the right
- Quickly lie back with head slightly hanging
- Wait 30–60 seconds
- Turn head to the left 90°
- Roll body to the left side
- Slowly sit up
👉 This is usually repeated 1–3 times.
🔹 2. Semont maneuver (alternative)
- rapid side-to-side movements
- used when Epley doesn’t help
🔹 3. Brandt–Daroff exercises (home training)
Brandt-Daroff exercises
- done 2–3 times daily
- helps brain adapt and reduce dizziness
👍 What helps reduce vertigo symptoms
🚶 Stay active (but safe)
- avoid sudden head movements
- move slowly when changing positions
💧 Hydration
Water
- dehydration can worsen dizziness
😴 Sleep position
- keep head slightly elevated
- avoid sleeping on the affected side initially
🚫 What does NOT work
- ear cleaning
- antibiotics (unless infection exists)
- “detox” drinks
- supplements alone
⚠️ When to see a doctor urgently
Not all dizziness is from crystals. Get checked if you have:
- constant dizziness (not just position-related)
- hearing loss
- severe headache
- weakness or speech problems
🧠 Bottom line
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is common and treatable, and maneuvers like the Epley maneuver are the most effective non-drug solution.
If you want, tell me:
- which side triggers your dizziness
- when it happens (lying down, turning, etc.)
I can guide you step-by-step with the exact maneuver for your case.
I get sometimes so dizzy that I can’t get out of bed for 2 days. Thank you so much for your advice. I appreciated very much. Anne
