If you have lines on your nails, it means you have …See more

That “fill in the blank” claim is a common internet myth. Lines on your nails don’t point to one single condition—they can mean different things depending on what kind of lines they are.

Here’s the real breakdown:

  • Vertical lines (running from cuticle to tip)
These are very common and usually harmless—often linked to aging or mild dryness.
  • Horizontal lines (deep grooves across the nail)
Called Beau’s lines, they can appear after illness, high fever, injury, or major stress on the body.
  • White lines or spots
Often from minor nail trauma (like bumping your nail), not usually a vitamin deficiency as people claim.
  • Dark lines (brown/black streaks)
These should be checked by a doctor, as in rare cases they can signal something serious.

So the viral idea that “lines = vitamin deficiency” or any one issue is misleading. If the lines are new, severe, or changing, it’s worth getting medical advice—but most of the time, they’re harmless.

If you want, you can describe what your nail lines look like and I’ll help you interpret them more accurately.
