Peace Lily

Posted on April 27, 2026 by Admin

The Peace Lily is a popular indoor ornamental plant known for its glossy green leaves and elegant white “flower” structures. Despite the name, it is not a true lily.

🌿 Basic Overview

Peace Lily belongs to the genus Spathiphyllum. It is widely grown as a houseplant because it is attractive, low-maintenance, and effective at improving indoor air quality.

🌸 Appearance

  • Dark green, elongated leaves
  • White hood-like flower (called a spathe) surrounding a central spike (spadix)
  • Flowers usually appear in cycles throughout the year under good conditions

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light
  • Can survive in low light, but may produce fewer flowers
  • Avoid direct sunlight (it can scorch the leaves)

💧 Watering Needs

  • Keep soil slightly moist
  • Water when the top inch of soil feels dry
  • Drooping leaves usually mean it needs water
  • Overwatering can cause root rot, so drainage is important

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 18°C to 30°C
  • Does not tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 10°C
  • Prefers moderate to high humidity (but adapts well indoors)

🪴 Soil & Potting

  • Use well-draining potting soil
  • A pot with drainage holes is essential
  • Repot every 1–2 years as it grows

🌱 Fertilizer

  • Feed monthly during spring and summer
  • Use a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer
  • Do not over-fertilize (can damage roots and leaves)

⚠️ Toxicity

  • Peace Lily is toxic to pets (cats and dogs) and mildly toxic to humans if ingested
  • Contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause mouth irritation and stomach upset

🌬️ Benefits

  • Helps remove some indoor air pollutants (like formaldehyde and benzene)
  • Increases humidity slightly through transpiration
  • Improves indoor aesthetics and mood

🐛 Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves → overwatering or poor drainage
  • Brown tips → low humidity or over-fertilizing
  • No flowers → insufficient light
  • Pests like spider mites or aphids (rare indoors)

🌼 Popular Varieties

  • Spathiphyllum wallisii (common house variety)
  • ‘Mauna Loa’ (larger leaves and flowers)
  • ‘Sensation’ (very large variety for spacious rooms)
